Choose a fragrance after wearing the exact version you plan to buy. A useful comparison records what you notice at the start, later in the wear, and when you would actually choose it again.

This is a personal testing routine, not a laboratory performance test. Its purpose is to help you make a purchase that fits your preferences. Essentia offers independently rebottled small sprays and premium 10ml travel formats; check which sizes are available on each listing.

Start with a clear question

Before choosing fragrances, decide what you want the next purchase to do. You might be looking for one familiar daily scent, a different profile for evenings, or a portable format for a fragrance you already like.

Write one sentence: “I want a fragrance I enjoy wearing when ______.” Add two qualities you would welcome and one you would rather avoid. These are your preferences, not rules about which fragrance a person of a particular age or gender should wear.

Keep the comparison consistent

  1. Identify the sample. Record brand, full fragrance name and concentration. Give each test a separate line in your notes.
  2. Choose one fragrance for the wear. Testing candidates on separate occasions makes it easier to attribute what you notice to a particular scent. Follow the product's application instructions.
  3. Record how you applied it. Note the container and number of applications. A spray from one atomizer is not a measured equivalent of a spray from another.
  4. Note the setting. Record indoors or outdoors, the activity, and any other scented products you used. You are documenting context rather than claiming controlled conditions.
  5. Return to your notes later. Record how the fragrance seems to you later in the wear and whether you would choose it for that setting again.

Use a simple wear worksheet

Copy this worksheet into your notes
Record What to write
Fragrance identity Brand, complete scent name, concentration and format.
Date and setting Where you wore it and what you were doing.
Application Container, number of applications and any other scented products used.
First impression Your own words for what you noticed at the start.
Later impression How it seemed later; include the time of the observation.
Preference Enjoy / undecided / do not enjoy, with one reason.
Would wear again? Yes, no or only for a particular situation.
Next decision Try again, choose a travel format, buy the listed full bottle or move on.

Your notes do not have to sound like a perfumer's description. “More sweet than I want for work” is useful if it explains your preference. Separate what you observed from what a review or product description led you to expect.

Give an undecided scent another wear

A practical starting point is to revisit a promising fragrance on a few separate occasions. This is a suggested routine, not a validated number of tests that guarantees a decision. Choose the number of wears that gives you enough information for the size of purchase you are considering.

Keep the fragrance identity unchanged between comparisons. An EDT test does not automatically answer whether you will enjoy the EDP version. If you change versions, start a new worksheet.

Do not interpret a fixed spray count or a promised number of hours as a substitute for your own comparison. The atomizer, application and conditions matter, and a personal wear note is not a universal product specification.

Turn the notes into your next choice

  • Still unsure: repeat the comparison or try another profile before a larger purchase.
  • You enjoy it and want to carry it: compare the available 10ml travel option.
  • You already reach for it often: compare the actual full-bottle volume and current price.
  • You are choosing a gift: use the recipient's preferences rather than your own wear notes alone.

Start with the sample and discovery set guide. Once you have a favorite, use the 10ml format guide and cost-per-milliliter guide to compare the purchase.

Opened fragrances generally cannot be returned under the standard policy. Read the full returns policy before ordering; a personal preference after opening is different from receiving an incorrect or damaged item.
